Do I Consent to This Search?

The founders of the United States were very distrustful of government. This is why they wrote the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution. It guarantees that people and the things they own are protected from “unreasonable searches.” Searches may only be conducted with a warrant: a document that shows that there is a good reason to search. A person’s right to privacy is one of our most basic rights and it helps define what it means to be free in the United States.
But on July 21, 2005, the New York City Police Department started searching bags carried by people into the subway and train system. This was in response to the bombings in the London, England subway system. And a poll found that the majority of New Yorkers feel that the searches are a good thing.
Safety on public transportation is important, but will the police searches make us safer or just less free? What do you think?
