The 2007 Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded to Mario R. Capecchi, Martin J. Evans and Oliver Smithies for the work they have done in stem cell research. There are many different types of cells in the body (liver or kidney, for example). A stem cell is a cell that has not yet developed into its final form and could eventually become any type of cell. Research on stem cells has the potential to help us cure diseases and disabilities in the future, but is opposed by some religious groups.
